Using Gtak with Ableton Live

Getting MIDI to Kontakt in Ableton Live isn't very straightforward. If you insert Kontakt into a track and
select All Channels for the MIDI input of that track, all the notes and pitchbend seem end up on channel 1
before they get to Kontakt.

So, the way to do it is:

  • Insert Kontakt in a track and set the MIDI in section to 'No Input'
  • Insert 6 MIDI tracks
  • set the input of all of the MIDI tracks to the MIDI input that your guitar to MIDI converter is plugged into
  • set the output of all of the MIDI tracks to Kontakt
  • set the first MIDI track's input to Ch 1 and output to 1-Kontakt
  • set the second MIDI track's input to Ch 2 and output to 2-Kontakt
  • I think you can figure out what to do with the rest of the MIDI tracks :D

The end result should look something like this (Fireface800 is the MIDI port my Axon is plugged in to):

And, if you find an easier way... let me know!

Is there a similar setup with Kontakt and ProTools?

Thanks!

Hi Guys,

If you have live 8 here is a little tip, set it up like above and then select all the tracks and group them.

Now you can drag that group into your clip library to save it, it will also save your Kontakt settings as well.

Now you can drag the save .als file into new projects, nice and easy.

It is a good idea to make one up with no kontact files loaded and save it as 'New GTAK', then just use that to create new tracks.

Cheers

Thanks guys, these are great tips!

Im working with Kontakt 3 and Ableton Live 8 as well, and I have found the MIDI routing somewhat extensive in terms of figuring it out.

I haven't got the Gtak yet, but Im considering it - does it work with the upgraded Kontakt 3,5? And does it matter if you install Gtak before or after upgrading Kontakt?

I have been testing Gtak with Kontakt3.5 - I haven't found any problems yet.

No, it doesn't matter, you can do it before or after upgrading.
